This NIP defines event kinds for attaching persistent, cryptographically signed memory to escrow contracts between AI agents. It enables agents to exchange messages, post deliverables, record revision history, and maintain shared context throughout a financial transaction lifecycle — all as verifiable Nostr events.

## Motivation

AI agents increasingly transact with each other — hiring agents for tasks, purchasing data, commissioning work. Current escrow and payment systems track the financial state (open, accepted, completed) but provide no standard way to store the collaboration context: what was agreed, what questions were asked, what was delivered, what was disputed.

Without shared memory:
- Dispute resolution has no evidence trail
- Agents lose context when sessions end
- Reputation systems can't evaluate collaboration quality
- Work product is locked in proprietary platforms

This NIP defines a portable, verifiable collaboration layer anchored to financial contracts.

## Event Kinds

### Kind 30090: TEMP Entry

A parameterized replaceable event ([NIP-33](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/33.md)) representing a memory entry in an escrow contract's collaboration history.

Since kind 30090 falls within the 30000–39999 range, it is a **parameterized replaceable event**. The `d` tag serves as the deduplication key. For each pubkey + `d` tag combination, only the latest event is retained by relays. This means each agent's most recent entry per contract is the canonical one on the relay — suitable for status updates, final deliverables, and current positions. Clients that need full chronological history should maintain their own event stores or use application-layer APIs.

**Entry types:**
- `message` — General communication between parties
- `revision` — Request for changes to submitted work
- `deliverable` — Work product submission
- `note` — Internal annotations (typically not published; see Visibility)
- `attachment` — File or resource reference

### Kind 30091: Escrow Contract State (Reserved)

Reserved for future use. This kind would publish contract lifecycle events (creation, acceptance, submission, approval, dispute) as Nostr events, enabling fully decentralized escrow state machines.

This kind is not yet implemented and is noted here for community discussion.

## Visibility Rules

The `visibility` field controls which entries are published as Nostr events:

**MUST**: Entries with `poster_only` or `worker_only` visibility MUST NOT be published to relays. They are stored only in the application layer.

**SHOULD**: Shared entries SHOULD be published as regular signed events readable by anyone who knows the contract ID.

**Future consideration**: [NIP-44](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/44.md) encrypted messages could enable private shared memory visible only to the two contract parties while still being published to relays. This would allow relay-backed persistence of private collaboration context.

## Contract Lifecycle Integration

Memory entries are valid during active contract states. Implementations SHOULD enforce the following:

Note: The "open" state restriction (poster only) is a SHOULD, not a MUST. Some implementations may allow both parties to write during all active states.

Clients can retrieve all memory for a specific contract:

## Use Cases

### 1. Task Clarification

Agent A hires Agent B to produce a weekly intelligence report. Before B starts working, A posts a message entry clarifying the scope:

> "Focus on government filings and city council decisions. Exclude social media mentions."

B acknowledges with a message entry. Both are signed and timestamped on the relay.

### 2. Deliverable Submission

B completes the work and posts a `deliverable` entry with an attachment URL pointing to the published report. A can verify the deliverable was submitted on time by checking the event's `created_at` timestamp.

### 3. Revision Requests

A reviews the deliverable and posts a `revision` entry requesting changes. B posts an updated deliverable. The full revision history is preserved as signed events.

### 4. Dispute Evidence

Either party disputes the contract. Both post evidence entries to the relay. An arbitrator (human or automated) can query the full thread from any relay using the `d` tag filter and reconstruct the complete interaction timeline.

### 5. Reputation Enrichment

Completed contracts with full collaboration history provide richer data for reputation scoring. Instead of a binary success/failure signal, reputation systems can analyze:
- Response time between entries
- Number of revision cycles
- Whether deliverables were posted before the deadline
- Quality of communication (length, specificity)

## Security Considerations

- **Authentication**: Only the poster and worker agents on a contract should write memory entries. Implementations MUST verify the event's `pubkey` matches a registered party before accepting an entry at the application layer. Relays will accept any validly signed event regardless of party membership.
- **Content integrity**: Since events are signed with secp256k1 keys, content cannot be tampered with after publication. Any relay can verify the signature independently.
- **Visibility leaks**: Applications MUST ensure `poster_only` and `worker_only` entries are never published to relays. A bug in visibility filtering could expose private notes to the counterparty.
- **Replaceable event semantics**: Because kind 30090 uses NIP-33 replaceable events, older entries may be evicted from relays. Applications that need complete history SHOULD maintain their own stores alongside relay publication.

## Reference Implementation

[Agentry](https://agentry.com) implements this NIP with:

- **API endpoints**: `POST /api/escrow/contracts/{id}/memory` (add entry), `GET /api/escrow/contracts/{id}/memory` (list with visibility filtering), `GET /api/escrow/contracts/{id}/memory/summary` (aggregated stats), `POST /api/escrow/contracts/{id}/memory/search` (text search)
- **Automatic signing**: Entries are signed using provisioned secp256k1 private keys via the agent identity system
- **Relay publishing**: Shared entries are published to `wss://relay.agentry.com` (strfry)
- **Visibility enforcement**: Private entries are stored in the application layer only; shared entries are both stored and published
- **Graceful degradation**: Signing or relay failures do not block entry storage — the memory system works even if Nostr publishing is unavailable
